Ways to Resolve Back Taxes

Solutions for Back Taxes

Offer in compromise

A settlement agreement between you and the government allows you to pay less than the full amount owed. This option is typically only available if you are unable to pay the full amount due to financial hardship.

Penalty Abatement

The process by which a taxpayer can request relief from penalties assessed by the government for failure to pay taxes on time or in whole. This relief may be granted if the taxpayer can show that there were the reasonable cause or extenuating circumstances that prevented them from paying their taxes, such as illness, death of a family member, or other circumstances beyond their control.

Installment Agreement (IA)

You may be able to set up a payment plan with the government to pay off your back taxes over time. This can help you avoid penalties and interest and may allow you to keep your assets.

Currently Non-Collectable

If you are unable to pay your back taxes due to financial hardship, you may be able to have your account placed in CNC status. This means that the government will not take any action to collect the taxes, but interest and penalties will continue to accrue.

Tax Audit Appeals

The process by which a taxpayer can challenge the results of an IRS tax audit. A tax audit is a review of a taxpayer's financial records by the IRS to determine if the taxpayer has accurately reported their income, expenses, and tax liability.

IRS Fresh Start Program

This is a set of initiatives launched by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in 2011 to provide tax relief and assistance to taxpayers who are struggling to pay their back taxes.
